For this Fresh Eyes Photography Walk we are going to be looking at Salford, a city whose history stretches back to the Neolithic age. With over 250 listed buildings in the city and now the redevelopment of the Salford Quays and new Media City area through the BBC’s recent move to the North, this promises to offer a range of opportunities to get your camera out.

We will take a walk around the streets of Salford searching for details and buildings that capture the history of the area. You will have the chance to take some shots of your own and find out about Andrew’s picture making process.

Andrew’s work is built out of many exposures, allowing him to control the detail, shape, colour and atmosphere in the photographs. Over the course of the workshop Andrew will give you an insight into how he does this and the way he uses his camera to capture strong elements, which build the final image.

After looking at the streets we will then visit Islington Mill. Now a hotbed of artistic activity but once a thriving cotton spinning mill, remains of its old industrial heritage lie on the 5th floor. Here Andrew will show how he works in low light photography, and again you will have the chance to take some shots of your own and ask him for guidance.

To conclude the session, Andrew will give a short Photoshop demonstration on how he builds his shots out of the elements formed throughout the day.

This tour is suitable for photographers of any skill level and any camera type, although manual settings on a camera will be useful. A tripod will be handy for inside the mill where the light is low but bear in mind you will need to carry this throughout the day.

Wrap up warm, as you will be outside and in the mill for large parts of the walk. Please wear suitable footwear for weather conditions and access to the 5th floor of Islington Mill. The event will still go ahead even in the event of rain. We advise you to bring a packed lunch.

Andrew Brooks has been photographing Manchester for many years and always finding new views and ways of looking at this city. In the buildings you can read the history of the town, from the huge mills of the industrial revolutions to the great civic buildings made as the city came of age. This gallery shows some of this work taken for his Hidden Manchester project which captures this side of his photography.
