Moy Williams - The Finest Piece of Black Ribbon

25 September 2012, 18:00 to 20:00

Redeye and Chinese Arts Centre are pleased to present an informal talk and book signing by Moy Williams. Recently Moy, one of Northern England's leading fashion and advertising photographers, took time off from his busy schedule for a photographic journey on America's loneliest road, Route 50, from the East to the West Coast. This is a rare chance to hear him talk about his work and this project.

Moy writes:

'"One of the finest pieces of black ribbon in the U. S. of A." I'm in a bar in Annapolis, Maryland, listening to one of the regulars describe Route 50. As I say goodnight and head towards my motel room I'm grateful for the chat, not only for the unexpected gift of a great title but because it feels like a green light at the start of my trip, an earnest nod of agreement: I've chosen the right route for my journey, I'm on the right road. It's a good job really: I've got three thousand miles to go.

'Route 50 is one of the oldest coast-to-coast roads to wind its way across America. I deviated north and south, exploring the landscape, following my nose and the tips from locals I met along the way. I photographed what I found, pausing among the dusty streets and shopfronts of small town USA, following the tarmac to meet open prairies, open faces.

'Three weeks, twelve states, one road, running through the heart of the continent. From the boardwalks of Ocean City to the ghost towns of the Rockies and the surf of the Pacific, these are some of the people and places I found along the way, all tied together by a fine piece of black ribbon.'

Arrive from 18:30 for a chat and a drink; the talk starts at 19:00. It's free to attend but you need to register in advance.
