From a Chinese village to Cumbrian garden, come and learn more about Chinese photographer Li Yuan-chia's self-portraits.

Considered as one of the most important Chinese artists of the 20th Century, Li Yuan-chia was a visual artist with a unique vision, he was said to have ‘developed photography in a highly personal way’. Li Yuan-chia spent the last 28 years of his life in Cumbria, establishing the LYC Museum at Banks farmhouse on Hadrian’s Wall, which contained an art gallery, theatre, library, printing press, children’s art room and a darkroom.

Redeye is very pleased to have started to build a partnership with The John Rylands Library, with the aim of spotlighting their comprehensive but little-known historic photography collections, one of the hidden photographic gems of the North of England. The first fruit of this relationship is their new series of events exploring aspects of the collection and historical photography, the work of visual artist Li Yuan-chia, and how to navigate the analogue/digital age in archives.

Please contact the library for more details about this event and the associated exhibition, 'Portrait of a Living Archive'.

Booking is optional, but places are limited so please book to avoid disappointment. To book please contact 0161 306 0555 or email jrl.events@manchester.ac.uk.
