Liverpool Free School (LFS), 1971, photographs by John Walmsley.
The LFS was founded and run by two teachers to offer a different school experience to kids who would benefit from it with lots of trips out and interesting things to do. One of the founders, John Ord, and photographer, John Walmsley, will be in the gallery space (G4) on the opening day, Friday 21st July, from 10.30am to 1pm to answer any questions.
They'd like to hear from anyone who was connected with the school, especially as kids. John Walmsley is a longtime documentary photographer. His final work at art school on A.S. Neill and his Democratic school, Summerhill, was published by Penguin Books. His work is held in the Permanent Collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London, and la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris. For 7 years in the 70s, he was a part-time lecturer at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
