In the mid-1980s, following his degree studies at Newport College of Art in South Wales, Stephen moved to San Diego in southern California. During his one-year stay in San Diego (1986 – 1987), he roamed around the city and the region photographing this environment that was both familiar and strange: familiar in that he had seen the landscape of California in films and television; but strange, as he noted all the odd details that stood out to an alien resident in this new land.
Alien Resident: Under Investigation was exhibited at Contemporary Art Space Chester in 2020. The accompanying catalogue was published in 2021 which included an essay by Mike Pinnington (editor of The Double Negative). Photographs from Stephen’s archive of San Diego have been published by Café Royal Books and The Velvet Cell. A virtual reality exhibition titled ‘Drive Thru’ has been created by Aaron Tonks of Blackpool School of Art using a selection of Stephen’s photographs.
Stephen Clarke is Senior Lecturer in Art and Design: Critical and Contextual Studies in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Chester.
