About
On 20 March 2018, critically acclaimed artist Edgar Martins joins us to talk about his life, work and his unique approach to photography. One of a series of talks from some of the UK's leading photographic artists, in partnership with Manchester School of Art. The lecture will take place in Lecture Theatre 2, Geoffrey Manton Building, Manchester Metropolitan University.

“Landscape, place, space, and architecture have established themselves as the predominant themes in Martins' photographic imagery. Martins uses photography to develop a philosophical, quasi-scientific investigation, examining various minimalist concepts of the contemporary urban landscape. Moving between the factual and fictional, between the concrete and the metaphorical, the artist operates within a landscape of uncertainty, permanent flux, transition, and opposition.”  - Purdy Hicks Gallery

"...Contemporary photography at its strongest: A seemingly effortlessly achieved look at our world in such a way that we are forced to have another look at it." - Joerg Colberg

Who is it for?
This event is for anyone who is interested in Edgar’s work, fine art, conceptual and contemporary photography, theory and alternative methods of representation. Early booking recommended.

Edgar Martins
"I am interested in a space between reality and imagination." Edgar Martins

With artful composition and controlled framing, but no digital manipulation - Edgar Martins creates sublimely beautiful views of often un-beautiful sites. His work maintains a close and subtle dialogue with the traditions of topography and landscape photography, but there is also a link to the cinematic, the pictorial, and the sculptural.

Edgar Martins is Portuguese by birth and grew up in Macau, China. He completed an MA in Photography & Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in London following a BA (Hons) in Photography & Social Sciences at the University of Arts London (formerly London College of Printing).

Edgar has won numerous awards including the Thames & Hudson and RCA Society Book Art Prize (2002) and the Jerwood Photography Award in 2003 for his series ‘Black Holes & Other Inconsistencies’ which has toured internationally. In 2008 Edgar was the recipient of the inaugural New York Photography Award (Fine Art category), and in 2009 he was also awarded the prestigious BES Photo Prize (Portugal), as well as a SONY World Photography Award (Landscape category). Most recently, Edgar Martins was awarded the 1st prize in the Fine Art— Abstract category of the 2010 International Photography Awards as well as nominated for the Prix Pictet 2009. He was selected to represent Macau (China) at 54th Venice Biennale. Edgar's work is represented internationally by several high-profile galleries, such as those of the V&A (London), RIBA (London), the Dallas Museum of Art (USA); Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian/Modern Art Centre (Lisbon), Fundação EDP (Lisbon), Fondation Carmignac (Paris), amongst others.
