Peter Watkins joins FORMAT Photoforum in Derby to discuss his ongoing practice, including his deeply emotive and arresting body of work The Unforgetting. The culmination of several year’s work that examines the artists German family history; the trauma surrounding the loss of his mother as a child, as well as the associated notions of time, memory and history, all bound up in the objects, places, photographs, and narrative structures circulated within the family. This is an exploration of a personal history that cannot be told with any certainty, but is told anyway.
Watkins graduated from MA Photography at the Royal College of Art in 2014 and his recent solo exhibitions include The Unforgetting, The Ravestijn Gallery, Amsterdam, 2016; The Unforgetting, Format Photography Festival, Derby, 2015; The Unforgetting, OPEN14 Award Winner, Brighton Photo Fringe, Regency Townhouse, Brighton, 2014. Group exhibitions include Pieces of You, Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, 2016; Vision 20/20, Christophe Guye Gallery, 2015 SHOW RCA 2014, RCA Battersea, London; Planche(s) Contact Photography Festival, Deauville, 2013; Thresholds, Belfast Exposed, Belfast, 2013; Wonders of the Visible World, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, 2011.
