Coming from Northern Ireland, Harry Morrison worked as a civil engineer at Carliol House in Newcastle upon Tyne from the early 1950s. Many of his photographs of Newcastle were taken in the early morning light before work. In an article for Amateur Photographer in 1956, he wrote:
How often it is the lighting conditions which transform everyday, mundane objects and surroundings for the camera! In this connection, I believe that outstanding photographs can be taken on one’s doorstep and therein lies the great advantage of being able to make a return journey if at first, the lighting conditions are not correct. My doorstep is Newcastle-upon-Tyne, particularly the riverside area, which I visit frequently during the year, usually in the mornings before work. With an element of luck and perseverance, I stumble upon ready-made pictures regularly.
He successfully entered his photographs in competitions around the world throughout the 1950s. In 2014 he donated his collection of exhibition prints to the AmberSide Collection. There are a small number of photographs of Belfast, Liverpool and London taken in the late 1940s before arriving in North East England. The others, taken on Tyneside and in Northumberland were taken between 1950 and 1956.
