Photographic artist Melinda Gibson joins Redeye to talk about her unique approach to photography.
About
Photographic artist Melinda Gibson joins us for an evening discussion on her life and work, where she will delve into her unique approach to photography.
Through her work with found imagery, Melinda Gibson takes an experimental approach to the form, creating 'visual remixes' that force the viewer to reconsider the medium and its canon. 'By slicing, cutting and de-contextualising the images I start to gain a greater appreciation of the works; I start understanding why and how these images have been created.' - Melinda Gibson.
In this event, Melinda will talk about her recent project, Lunar Caustic, where she collaborated with Thomas Sauvin on thousands of salvaged, neglected negatives, and discuss more generally her artistic process and approach to the medium.
The following day Melinda will give a group critique and workshop. Tickets to the workshop include entry to this talk.
Melinda Gibson
'It’s pretty clear that Melinda Gibson is looking at photography in a new way. Her images are wonderfully complex and layered, and allow us to question reality.' - Lenscratch
Melinda Gibson is interested in the changing perspectives of the photographic medium, and how images are viewed and understood through the technological advances in photography. Her work has included slicing, cutting and de-contextualising of photographs. In her recent celebrated project Lunar Caustic with Thomas Sauvin she created new imagery from a huge archive of rescued Chinese negatives, damaged by neglect, fate and the decay of chemical compounds.
Melinda studied for a BA (Hons) in Photography at the London College of Communication and is a Lecturer in Photography at Camberwell College of Arts. She was nominated for the Meijburg Art Commission in 2015, Foam's Paul Huf Award in 2015 and 2014, was selected as one of the jury members for the Unseen Dummy Award 2013, and was winner of the Foam Talent Call and Magenta Foundation Award in 2010. Melinda currently lives and works in London.
