What is Lightbox?
Lightbox is a yearlong course that aims to launch or develop the careers of the best emerging photographers. The application process for 2017-18 course will open in May 2017. Further details about the content of the course and the application process will be announced then.
Beginning with intensive workshops led by experts in the photography industry, Lightbox is designed to challenge assumptions, encourage reflection and nurture artistic potential. With collaboration at its core, Lightbox sees participants work in a group on a collaborative project with the guidance of an expert mentor, to culminate in a launch at a high profile photography festival.
Who is Lightbox aimed at?
Lightbox is aimed at photographers who already have a high standard of photography and are keen to experiment and develop their work further. We welcome applicants from any area of practice who are willing to collaborate with a group. Applications are open to photographers worldwide.
If you would like to talk to a Redeye staff member about your eligibility, email lightbox@redeye.org.uk.
Speakers
Richard Stout and Karen Rangeley:
Richard and Karen are part of a group collective of seven emerging photographers from across the UK, selected by an expert judging panel during last years Lightbox. Their practices range from the constructed image to documentary and archival, yet share the common themes of history, place and identity. They collaborated under the mentorship of Nicola Shipley, Director of Grain Photography Hub, to produce Seven Day Suit; an innovative photographic and moving image project, which explores the cultural phenomenon of the tracksuit. The installation premiered at Brighton Photo Biennial in October 2016. The collective is currently developing new work around the theme of urbanism and transition. Tristan Poyser, Peter Barker and Simon Bray:
Tristan, Peter and Simon are part of Strand Collective, a group of seven photographers based in Manchester and Yorkshire that came together during last years Lightbox currently under the mentorship of Dewi Lewis of Dewi Lewis Publishing. Their exhibition Second Skin explored the ways in which identity is shaped by complicated social, family and environmental demands. Each collective member interpreted ‘Second Skin’ from their own point of view, encouraging viewers to question their own unique position in the world and to create conversation around the different roles they play. Second Skin debuted at No Walls Gallery as part of the Brighton Photo Fringe Festival 2016 and coincided with a self-published book. For more information visit www.strandcollective.co.uk
