This series, as with all our events, will be conducted online for the foreseeable future on one-to-one Zoom meetings.
Following your requests we have invited specialists in photo book design, Alan Ward, and curating, Mario Popham, as well as Redeye's director Paul Herrmann. Please keep your suggestions coming, we find them very helpful!

REVIEWERS
Alan Ward is a designer, artist and collaborator based in Manchester, UK. His book design credits extent throughout the spectrums of photography and art for individuals, institutions and publishing houses. He has recently completed Len Grant’s Re Gen Mcr, his 30 year retrospective publication and also designed Martin Parr Return to Manchester for Manchester Art Gallery. His personally designed bookworks include: Photographs from Another Place, his long-term photographic research project, co-published with Dewi Lewis; Breaking Ground, short-listed for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2017; and Cambridge Rules 1848, an 800 page exposed bound, scale model of the public art commission he has just completed with fellow artist Neville Gabie.
His sensitive, and empathetic approach to the book-form for photographers and artists, is reinforced by an extensive knowledge of print production, built over three decades of successful projects.
Mario Popham is a photographer, curator and educator of Japanese and English descent who is currently based in Manchester, UK. His interests mainly lie in man’s paradoxical relationship to nature and how this finds expression within the post industrial British landscape.
He was a recipient of the Magenta Flash Forward Emerging Photographer Award 2013 and was nominated for the Tim Hetherington Trust 2014. His collaboration with artist Tom Baskeyfield, collectively titled Shaped by Stone, was supported by Arts Council England exhibited at HOME, Manchester in 2018. Mario works as the curator at Waterside Arts in Sale, alongside other independent curatorial projects. In his role at Waterside he has been developing the gallery into a space for photography, most notably exhibiting Mandy Barker in 2019, and the group show Sweet Debris which was also published in a catalogue of the same name.
Paul Herrmann is an organiser and leader in photography. He is director of Redeye, and also of The Photographic Collections Network, an equivalent to Redeye for anyone working with photographic collections or archives. He has started and steered a range of projects, and brought people together, in photography and the arts. His background is as an editorial photographer working with not-for-profit organisations for three decades. He talks, writes and advises on a range of business and professional issues in photography. Paul can give advice on planning and career development for photographers, and many other aspects of your business such as commissions, sales, pitching and presenting, fundraising, contracts and copyright. If you have seen your work drop off or change due to the COVID-19 pandemic he can advise on rethinking your business model, and direct you towards other support that is available.

Who is it for?
The Critique Surgeries are designed to be informal sessions for photographers who are looking for feedback and advice. Maybe you are struggling for inspiration, have hit a dead end with your latest project or you simply want advice on where, or who, to show your work to. Please look at the reviewers bios carefully to see who it would be best for you to speak to. These sessions are designed to be friendly and supportive, and can be used to prepare your portfolio for an upcoming review or competition. When
We have slots with all of the reviewers available between 4-7pm on Monday the 15th March 2021. Please choose your preferred thirty-minute slot at the time of booking. We recommend you arrive 5 minutes before your designated slot to ensure that the tech is all working.
Where
Online! Critique Surgeries sell out quickly so please book as soon as possible to secure your place. We will then be in touch with everyone who has registered with the meeting code and password. You will need an internet connection and a computer, smartphone or tablet. This event will take place over Zoom but you don't need an account to join in.
Tickets
You can book one or more sessions (each with a different reviewer). For Redeye members, the first session is free of charge. Subsequent sessions are £20 each. For non-members, each session is £20. You can join Redeye as a member from £4 per month or £2.50 a month for concessions.
Due to no-shows at previous Critique Surgeries we now have to charge Redeye Members a £20 deposit per review to secure your booked slot(s). You will then be refunded to the same bank account as you used to book. The refund is normally processed the next working day. If you would like to book multiple reviews you can book as usual and we will refund £20 for your first review.
Please book onto a specific thirty-minute time slot (or slots). Slots will be visible once you have clicked the ticket link below (before you have to pay). Space and slots are very limited so if you are unable to attend your appointment please let Rachael Burns know as soon as possible.
Any suggestions?
The Critique Surgeries are a regular feature of our events programme, with surgeries every few months. Hosting them online gives us the opportunity to reach reviewers who are located based outside the region or even internationally. If you have any suggestions for reviewers please send them to chat@redeye.org.uk.
A note about the pricing
These Critique Surgeries are expensive for Redeye to produce; we pay the reviewers for their work. The £20 fee is somewhat below cost price so please make the most of your time and give us as much warning as you can if you are not able to attend. Although we don't normally offer refunds for cancellations less than 14 days before an event, if you have to cancel and we are able to fill your cancelled slot we can then refund you.
