Daniel Meadows talk

29 February 2012, 18:30 to 20:00

Redeye and Manchester School of Art at MMU are delighted to welcome Daniel Meadows to Manchester to talk about his outstanding career of image making and photography.

"Evocative, highly personal photojournalism from a true pioneer of postwar British photography." Sean O'Hagan, The Guardian

Daniel Meadows was one of a group of photographers who spearheaded the independent photography movement inthe early 1970s, breaking with tradition and infusing the medium with new energies and ways of seeing. His practice iscomplex, passionate and sometimes deeply autobiographical.

As a Manchester Polytechnic graduate working alongside a group that included Martin Parr, Peter Fraser, Brian Griffin and Charlie Meecham, Daniel Meadows became renowned in the 1970s for his Free Photographic Omnibus. As he travelled throughout the UK in a double-decker bus and documented the social change that was happening throughout Britain at the time, Meadows created a level of engagement between audience and subject.

Between 1971 and 1987, he produced an astonishing record of urban society in Britain, working in a uniquely collaborative way through his interviews with - and writing about – his subjects.

More recently Daniel has pioneered digital storytelling in Britain with the award winning BBC Capture Wales projectand a Lecturer in Photography and Participatory Media at Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. This talk offers a unique opportunity to listen to Daniel speak about his career, work and current ambitions back in Manchester.

The talk starts at 18:30 sharp! Doors open at approx 18:15.
